Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips
We all want a clean home, free from dirt and germs. But while chemical cleaners may be effective, they can be harmful for the environment, as well as to your family and pets. Here are our tips for cleaning your home without damaging the environment:
Eco-Friendly Cleaning Tips

Store-Cupboard Saviours

You can try a new cleaning routine, without buying anything new! Some of the most effective natural cleaners are things that most of us already have in our fridge or cupboards.

Lemons have incredible antiseptic and antibacterial qualities, thanks to their high acidic content. For an easy way to clean your microwave, chop a lemon in half, pop it in a jug of water (make sure the water completely covers the fruit), and put it in the microwave for 3 minutes. Once the timer has finished, leave it to stand for at least 5 minutes with the door shut, so that the steam can work its magic. Then remove the jug, and simply wipe away the dirt inside!

To disinfect your chopping boards, slice a lemon in half and dip the cut side in some coarse salt, then use this to scrub away stains. The salt works like a scourer, removing tough stains, and the lemon disinfects the surface.

Baking soda is also a powerful cleaning agent. For an easy toilet cleaner, throw a cup of baking soda in the bowl and let it sit for an hour, then add a cup of white vinegar – the mixture will foam up just like the volcanos you made at school! Once the bubbling has stopped, leave it for another hour, then flush it all away.

For a non-toxic all-purpose cleaner, mix white vinegar and lemon peels in a bottle or jar, and leave it to marinade for a few days. Strain out the lemon peel, and pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle.

Get Steamy

If you want to kill bacteria in your home, but don’t like the idea of harsh chemicals, then steam is your new best friend. With a steam cleaner, you can kill 99.9% of bacteria on your floors, work surfaces, and more, with nothing more than water! You can also use steam to cut through tough grease and burnt-on dirt, so it is ideal for cleaning the oven or barbecue.

Freshen your air the natural way

Shop-bought air fresheners can smell sweet, but the chemicals used to create the fragrance can be harmful, especially for people with allergies.

For a natural air-freshening spray, mix 200ml of water, 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol or vodka, and 15-20 drops essential oil in an empty spray bottle. Give it a good shake before use, then spritz away! The best part is, the scent is totally up to you – why not try lavender and chamomile for a calming mood, or tea tree, lemon and eucalyptus for freshness!
