Your Kitchen Cleaning Checklist

Daily Tasks

Clean the dishes

Try to end every day with an empty sink, to stop them piling up and becoming a chore to deal with. Try to wash as much as you can while you’re cooking, and load the dishwasher or hand wash your plates and cutlery straight after your meal.

Wipe the sink

Once you’ve washed up for the night, wipe your sink clean, and dry it with a clean cloth or tea towel to avoid water marks.

Wipe down surfaces

Spray your work surfaces with a multi-purpose cleaning spray, and wipe them over with a cloth.

Clean the hob

It’s almost impossible to avoid food splashing onto your hob while you’re cooking. The hob will be too hot to wipe down after you’ve cooked, so try to get into the habit of cleaning your hob first thing in the morning.

Weekly Tasks

Check fridge for expired food

Before you do your weekly shop, check your fridge for anything that’s been forgotten about and gone out date.

Clean the microwave

For an easy way to clean your microwave, mix together 2 tablespoons of lemon juice or vinegar and 2 cups of water in a glass microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for two to three minutes. Let it cool down, then carefully remove the bowl and wipe away the dirt inside.

Wipe the outside of cupboards

Go over the cupboards with a dry duster, then wipe them down with a multi-purpose spray.

Clean tiles/backsplash

If you have tiles or a backsplash behind your cooker, spray and wipe them regularly to get rid of food splashes and marks.

Replace sponges and wash cleaning cloths

Sponges and cloths can be breeding grounds for bacteria – replace them regularly to keep your kitchen hygienically clean.

Clean the floors

Always clean your floors last, so you don't have to worry about drips or dust. You can either vacuum and then mop your floors, or you could choose a floor cleaner that vacuums, mops & dries at the same time!

Monthly Tasks

Clean the washing machine

Washing machines can build up a lot of nasty dirt and grime in places that you can’t see. TO keep your machine smelling fresh and working it’s best, you should clean it out regularly. To clean the drum, add a scoop of bicarbonate of soda to the empty drum, and then put on your hottest wash cycle. Once this has finished, wipe underneath the rubber door seal, remove and clean the detergent drawer, wipe down the door and buttons. You should also regularly check your filter – check your washing machines manual or ask the manufacturer for how to do this.

Clean the dishwasher

It’s very common for dishwashers to get blocked up with bits of food – this stops it from cleaning effectively, and can cause a very unpleasant smell. Remove the bottom rack, check the drainage filter in the bottom, and remove any blockages. To clean the rest of the dishwasher, place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the upper rack of the machine. Run the dishwasher through a hot-water cycle - this will wash away grease and grime and remove musty odours.

Deep clean the fridge freezer

Your fridge can start to smell if it’s not regularly cleaned. Once a month, empty it completely, take out all of the racks, drawers and shelves, and clean these thoroughly in soapy water. Then wipe out the inside of the fridge. Let everything dry before putting it back in.

Descale the kettle

For an easy way to descale your kettle, fill it up with half water and half vinegar. Then boil the kettle, and let it soak overnight. In the morning pour out the vinegar solution, rinse it out several times with clean water. Boil it a few times with clean water to remove any vinegar smell that is left over.

Clean the oven

If you go too long without cleaning your oven, it builds up a thick layer of burned-on grease and dirt that is tough to remove, but you can prevent this by regularly cleaning. Remove the racks and soak these in hot soapy water – if they don’t fit in the sink, use the bathtub. To clean the inside, make a paste out of baking soda and water, rub it all over the walls of the oven, and leave it to sit overnight. Then wipe away the mixture with a damp cloth.

Clear out and clean your cupboards

It's easy to forget about the insides of your cupboards - it can be a case of "out of sight, out of mind"! Once a month, take everything out of your cupboards, and give the inside a good clean. This is also a great opportunity to look through everything you've collected in your cupboards, and clear out anything that has gone out of date.
